Gary McKinney
I graduated from WVU with a degree
in Medical Technology and joined the staff of the old University Hospital where
I became Chief of Clinical Chemistry. In 1982, I was recruited by Preston
Memorial Hospital in Kingwood, WV, as their Clinical Laboratory Director. I
spent the next several years there building, equipping, and staffing a
state-of-the-art medical laboratory, and also serving as the hospital's
Infection Control Practitioner. After getting involved in occupational medicine,
I became intrigued by occupational illness and injury. I went back to WVU and
earned a master's degree in Occupational Health and Safety Engineering. Upon
completion of my masters, I accepted a position as Industrial Hygienist with the
US Department of Labor - OSHA. I eventually became Assistant Area Director of
the USDOL-OSHA Area Office in Charleston, WV, the position from which I retired
in May of this year. I am in the process of moving back to the mountain-top home
that I built back in the mid-1970's just outside of Morgantown, and plan to take
an occasional consulting job in the field of occupational safety and health to
keep my brain active. I also plan to spend more time with my classic car hobby
(currently a 1950 Cadillac Coupe, a 1966 Eldorado convertible, and a 1977
International Scout).
